Fredrik was born as the son of Karen and Trond, on the farm Mogset in Meldal, Norway. At 21 Fredrik emigrated to America and added a new and very different chapter to the Mogset family history book. This saga-chapter is a bridge between Fredrik's start in Meldal and his life in the new world.

By LA Dahlmann

Meldal is a beautiful spot in the middle parts of Norway - a rural community located alongside the river Orkla - surrounded by forest-clad hills and highlands.

The Orkla is a salmon rich river and has been a great friend to the people of these whereabouts for centuries. But alas - as the Mogset history book can tell us - the Orkla river also carries tales of great loss and destruction.

Being a medaling through and through, Fredrik would have spoken a rich trønder-dialect (trøndersk). Traces of his childhood language would no doubt have followed him to the end of his days. What we often do not think about is that most non-American-born inhabitants of North America in the 1800s and early 1900s would have spoken English with a very heavy foreign accent.

In 1956, the Meldal historian Nils Lykkja chronicled Fredrik's family ties to the Mogset farm - going all the way back to the 1600s. However, Fredrik's ancestors may have lived in this region for hundreds of years more - throughout the viking era, surviving the black death.

Below, you will find a link to the saga-chapter "The Mogset farm history" where you can follow Fredrik's family from 1653 and onwards. But first - some milestones in Fredrik's life - both before and after he left his homeland behind in the year 1900.
